Make in India electronics intiative is steadily transforming itself into a global hub for electronics manufacturing. The country’s push is not only strong but also methodical and sustained, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who oversees Electronics & IT, Railways, and Information & Broadcasting.

Speaking at a roundtable in New Delhi on July 3, 2025, Vaishnaw emphasized India’s ambitious goal of reaching 38% value addition in electronics manufacturing within the next five years—on par with China, which currently stands at the same level. Building Capabilities, Reducing Dependence :

In response to concerns raised after reports emerged that Apple’s key supplier Foxconn repatriated over 300 Chinese engineers from its Indian operations, the minister assured that India is developing its capabilities across the value chain. He noted that this move by Foxconn, reportedly influenced by Chinese government directives, underlines the need for India to build a resilient and independent supply chain.

“De-risking is learning the skills, making it here, and developing our own supply chain—which is exactly what we are doing,” Vaishnaw said.

He also pointed to strong international support from countries like Taiwan, the United States, and South Korea. But at the heart of this transformation, he stressed, lies India’s own engineering talent.

Massive Investment and Growing Ecosystem :

India’s electronics manufacturing industry is currently valued at around $145 billion and is growing at a robust 20% compound annual growth rate. The government has made significant investments, including the ₹76,000 crore India Semiconductor Mission and a ₹23,000 crore component incentive scheme launched earlier this year.

Several landmark projects are already in motion:

• Tata Electronics’ chip assembly plant in Assam will serve telecom manufacturers globally.
• Micron’s unit in Gujarat will supply memory chips.
• CG’s Gujarat plant will focus on power electronics.

These investments reflect a clear national commitment to technological self-sufficiency.

Design: India’s Hidden Strength :

Beyond manufacturing, India’s real power lies in its design capabilities. “Almost all complex things in the world are designed here in our country,” said the minister. This strength, he believes, is rare and must be nurtured and scaled further to position India as a global electronics design and innovation leader.

The response to the government’s component manufacturing scheme has been enthusiastic. Over 100 registrations have taken place, with nearly 80% coming from micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This shows a broad-based industry participation that bodes well for sustainable ecosystem development.

Social Media and the Future of Regulation :

Touching on another major topic, Vaishnaw addressed concerns around misinformation and the evolving role of social media platforms. He noted that these platforms now behave more like traditional media, with editorial controls through algorithmic content moderation.

“There’s consensus among all political parties that platforms must take greater responsibility for the content they host,” he said. India is working on building a political consensus and remains open to updating its legal framework if the public and political support align.

India’s electronics journey is more than just about manufacturing—it’s about resilience, independence, and innovation. In a world increasingly affected by geopolitical shifts, India is taking deliberate steps to secure its future by focusing on every component, every machine, and every part of the supply chain.

As Vaishnaw put it, “We have to get into every machine, every component. We must go into every part of it and start manufacturing them.”
